Wednesday April 28, 2010-Mud Lake Trail

This morning, being cleaning day again, we headed out to Mud Lake Trail. This is within the city limits and is close to the Water Treatment Plant.

It was a bit windy and chilly but warmed up nicely with the sun (another day where a 40% chance of rain was predicted). I'm not complaining!

We saw lots of critters today. I had no sooner gotten out of the truck than I spotted a Pileated Woodpecker not far away. He wasn't skittish at all but we had a difficult time photographing him due to the vegetation.

We also heard and then finally saw a Flicker. We also saw a couple of muskrats, quite a few turtles and numerous squirrels, geese and red-wing blackbirds.

The walk along the trail was pretty especially when we got into the trees. With the new leaves coming out it was so pretty. We didn't walk the whole trail as Gordon wanted to go back to see if we could get more photos of the Pileated Woodpecker. He was still there so we spent quite a bit of time trying to get into a position to see him clearly. My shutter would snap and he would have moved his head into the hole he was creating in the tree but I did manage to get some shots.

We returned home about half past noon time and relaxed for the rest of the day.

  1. You two are still going on "Happy Trails", sightseeing and looking for good pictures.
You two will always do that, so we love to see, and hear about them, and your daily lives.
Having a house isn't going to change that!
    The photos are lovely, Thanks.

  2. Sandra those pictures are just wonderful. I am glad that you are "blooming where you are planted" as the saying goes and are making the most of your small town life. I can tell you will love it!!

  3. Those are beautiful birds. One bad habit though, they tend to pick at eaves troughs in our area and that makes a heck of a racket early in the morning waking us up ☺

  4. You got some fine shots of the woodpecker. I loved to watch them when I lived in NC - three different species used to be around all the time, including the Pileated, but they sure can ruin a tree!

  5. Even the wildlife seems to be happy that it is spring in Ontario. And I'm sure that posing them for all the wonderful pictures wasn't a snap. But the results are stunning.

  6. I agree with those that commented. Great pictures of the birds they're so hard to photograph. It's going to be fun keeping up with you guys even though you're not traveling. Please be sure to update when you hear from the lawyer.

  7. Great pics --- I just love your nature walks! Those pileated are sure shy buggers, I snapped a shot of one this past winter and he got away quick.
